SEASON OVERVIEW
Game Schedule & Limits
Our season follows Minnesota Hockey and District 3 guidelines, which set clear boundaries on the number of games we can play. These limits help maintain a healthy balance between competition, development, and rest.
Season Details:
The season runs from November 15 through mid-February
Includes 18 District 3 games against a total of 11 teams
Concludes with the District Tournament (no state tournament)
Game Limits:
A maximum of 35 total games are allowed each season under MN Hockey/District rules
This total includes 18 league games and 4 tournaments (Squirt International included)
Additional games will consist of 2–3 coach-controlled scrimmages, officiated by certified student referees
Tournaments
Our season includes both home and away tournaments that give players valuable experience and team-building opportunities.
Details:
Two away tournaments (locations TBD)
Two local tournaments in Edina and Wayzata
Volunteers are needed for team dinners, gifts, and activities
Coordinate with Brian and Sarah for tournament planning
Practice Philosophy
Our practices are designed to build a strong foundation of hockey skills, game awareness, and confidence. Each session reinforces key concepts while keeping players engaged and challenged.
Key Points:
Core drills are introduced early and built upon throughout the season
Practices include a blend of hockey IQ development, fundamentals, and small-area games
Practice plans are available for parents and players to review
Players are encouraged to talk about what they learned after each session
For detailed session plans and schedules, see the Practice Plan page
GAME DAY
Player Expectations
Preparation and timing are key parts of our success. Arriving early allows players to settle in, focus, and be ready to compete.
Expectations:
Be in the locker room at least 45 minutes before puck drop
Plan to arrive at the rink 60 minutes early
Pre-game routine led by Coach Rolly
Late arrivals disrupt the rhythm of the team, so please plan ahead
Wear designated GAME off-ice apparel
Gold on top, Blue on bottom
Wayzata Blue/Blue warmups are also acceptable
Crocs and slides are not recommended; bring sneakers instead (keep a pair in your bag)
Game Duties (for parents)
Each family will rotate through a few important game-day roles that help the team operate smoothly. Mistakes are never a problem; everything can be easily corrected.
Responsibilities:
Clock operator
Game sheet recorder
Penalty box attendant
Guidelines:
No stress if errors occur — they can always be fixed
Swap duties with another parent if you are unavailable (use WhatsApp to coordinate)
Assignments will be posted on the WYHA Team Website
Penalty Box Role
Serving in the penalty box is an opportunity to support the players in a positive way.
Expectations:
Provide calm encouragement to players serving penalties
Help them reset and stay focused before returning to play
Do not coach or discuss the penalty itself
TEAM ENVIRONMENT & CULTURE
Positive Team Environment
Our team environment is built on positivity, respect, and encouragement. Every player contributes to the success and spirit of the group.
